Having an external garage or workshop is often very useful, but not everyone knows how to make sure they are properly secured.
The anxiety about intruders breaking in and vandalizing or taking your possessions is a valid one because it is one of the most common crimes about. That is why it makes sense to take steps to ensure any external building is secure and safe from such occurrences. With that in mind, here are seven tips for making this happen.
Look for Vulnerable Spots
Take a look around your garage/workshop. Do you see any vulnerable parts? If the answer is no, look again! They are there, and you have to find them in order to protect them.
Intruders will scout out your buildings looking for potential weak spots where they are able to gain easy access. It is the oldest trick in the book, and a highly effective one so you have to be one step ahead of the curve in order to combat their strategies. Shine a light in all of the dark corners and fix anything that jumps out as a potential red flag.
Invest In Great Locks
A great lock is one that can’t be broken by traditional methods often implemented by burglars.
It is a good idea to invest in something like an electronic locking system that is backed up by padlocks, chain locks, or even deadlocks. The more, the better, as long as you remember where you put your keys.
Have Protection if an Intruder Comes Around
Sometimes, a deterrent approach is the best one. Find an effective and reasonably priced firearm with ammo and don’t be afraid to display a sign saying you have one. People should be made aware that this property is highly protected, and that you are within your rights to keep it that way. Nine times out of 10 this is enough to put any potential thief off and send them packing.
Keep Everything Upgraded
Locks only work well if they are supported by the latest technology. There are lots of products on the market in modern society that allow you to look after your outbuildings more effectively. If you are concerned about the safety of the fortress, it may be time to research how best to upgrade the entry points so that it is more difficult to infiltrate.
Cover Up
There are lots of common items that thieves tend to look for when invading a home or outbuilding. If you are storing anything on that list, it is time to invest in some decent covers.
If a burglar can’t see what you’re storing or keeping, they won’t have enough reason to break in in the first place.
Ensure things like cash are stored in a safe with a cover on, and that tools are always left out of sight away from windows, and under a sheet or similar.
Consider Security Lights
Motion lights are one of the oldest, most reliable ways to deter potential robbers. Nobody wants to get caught when breaking and entering, and that is why most of these activities happen under the cover of darkness. You can combat this simply by installing some good quality security lights to surround your garage/workshop.
Install Video Surveillance
Another handy asset that helps protect any space is video surveillance. Cameras are everywhere nowadays, and they are very helpful things when it comes to both catching and stopping people from stealing your possessions.
Keep your garage or workshop safe by taking all the basic safety prevention steps listed above. Even if you just do half of the above tasks, your building will be significantly more protected, and that counts a lot!
